Member Profile: Marta C. Moerch
Finance Director/City Clerk
City of St Johns
Where are you originally from?
Rochester, NY. Right by Lake Ontario. Moved to Phoenix in 1987 and it took
me three years to thaw out. After empty nesting, my new hubby and I moved to
St. Johns in 2002. We love the night skies, clean air and no traffic!!
Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I love being part of something greater and knowing I can make a difference.
This is my home and what better way to influence your town's future than by
being involved in its' present?
What do you like most about your job?
My entire career has been private sector (banking) and this is my first foray
into government so it's all very new. Not to mention doing two jobs (Finance
Director and City Clerk) is quite a lot. The most amazing part so far is how
wonderfully helpful everyone has been - no matter who I call, what town they're
in or position they hold; everyone takes the time to answer my questions, share
their expertise and point the way. I'm finding that government employees are
much more willing to assist, and don't hold their cards as close to the chest
as private company employees do!
What areas of local government interest you the most?
Even though my duties are finance and clerking, my passion is creating sustainable
communities. There are so many facets to being a well-rounded, livable community
and I want to be a part of creating that.
As a local government professional, what accomplishment are you most proud of?
I'm proud of the fact that the City of St. Johns saw enough in me to pull me
away from the private sector and let me become involved in growing our town!
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
Best Advice: favorite quote which took on additional meaning after my near-fatal
accident and NDE - "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by
the moments that take our breath away". I also like "Great spirits have always
encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds" - Albert Einstein.
