Introduction
We all face pressure in our daily lives both personally and professionally. How do we do a better job of handling our
pressures? The key is putting ourselves into a better position for handling the pressure whenever the pressure comes
into our life.
Mistake #1
Putting yourself into a known position of pressure. Look ahead, when you have that important presentation, get to the
presentation room early. Survey the room; check out the audio visuals, if something is amiss you have time to fix it.
You have plenty of time to call the audio visual person to help you.

Most managers suffer from the same problem. They think they know the answers and that their employees
should listen. However, the best managers know it is the other way around. To gain employee support and
buy-in, great managers do more listening than talking. They ask more questions than they make statements
and they believe that others have good ideas to offer. Here are five ideas to help you be a better
listener and gain the support of your employees.

The Mejorando Group
You've attended the conferences where a presenter (possibly me) spoke about it. You've read the articles
which focused on the impacts from it. You've scanned a number of web sites to learn more about what your
agency can do to address it. You've discussed it at staff meetings. The topic at the center of all this
is the unprecedented number of retirements currently happening within public sector organizations.
Retirement parties used to be an occasional office event, nowadays they occur almost weekly, or so it
seems. I have dubbed this phenomenon the "(baby) boomerang" effect: the impacts resulting from the exodus
by baby boomers from government agencies. As these seasoned employees depart and take with them their
judgment and problem-solving capabilities, (two areas essential to continued effectiveness for an
organization), the question arises about what you can do to replace them and their talent? In two words:
Succession Planning.

Accountant City of Avondale
Where are you originally from?
I grew up in Culver City, CA for five years before my family moved to Fontana, CA. I left Fontana, CA in
1998 to attend Cal State University, San Bernardino and lived there all my life before relocating to
Arizona two years ago.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in local government?
I was able to land a job with San Bernardino County, Office of the Auditor/Controller throughout my
sophomore year in college. Eventually, I made that job into a career in the government sector.
